Legacy of Kain: Fate’s End
Chapter 12

At Ushtenheim, a town barely recognizable as such from centuries of abandonment.  The houses easily fall apart if entered, sometimes harming Kain.  There are a few roaming tribes whom have taken shelter, and they will attack Kain if he comes too close.  Again, this should be a nice place to look around for runes.

Kain: (Thinking) “Ushtenheim was barely recognizable.  It had rotted to almost nothing but hollow husks of the once thriving center it once was.  It had been the respected feeding grounds of Janos Audron, the creator of all vampires.  Though folktales depicted him as a gluttonous beast whom held the city in terror.  I had known him as an honorable figure, worthy of the title as progenitor of my race.  The day the Sarafan, misguides priests, invaded the town, they decimated it and Janos equally in one movement.  What I wouldn’t give to have been at his side, fighting a glories yet lost cause.  I wasn’t sure why Dumuzi had sent me here, but I’d explored the area to humor him.”

The Player does so, not running into any real kind of danger.  As Kain reaches the entrance to Janos Auldron’s retreat, he sees a shadowed figure of Vorador standing before it, waving for him to follow.

Kain: “Vorador!  How can this be?  Have you fallen in the more one-hundred years of my absence?”

Vorador does not reply, but beckons him through the retreat, then walks through a wall.  The Player must realize that only by shifting into the Spectral Realm can Kain follow.  The area is a vast underground cavern with giant stalactite-buildings hanging from the ceiling, and absolute nothingness below.  Vorador floats by the stalactites, disappearing in the midsts.  Shifting back to the Material Realm reveals that over half of the stalactites only exist in the Spectral Realm.  Unfortunately, it will be ewsy to die in this area, as falling causes automatic death.  It is up to the Player to figure out in what combination from stalactite to stalactite to jump from, what stalactites don’t exist in the Material Realm, where Transporting is possible, and what walls within the stalactites can be broken without the structure falling down.  There are no humans to feed upon, and few wraiths to consume, though the flying ones must be destroyed before they hit Kain in mid-jumps.
At the end is a gigantic stalactite temple with statues of the Old Ones by the front doors.  Vorador again beckons Kain to follow, but he disappears for the last time when Kain gets near.  Inside is an odd machine with artwork resembling a touch of the Oriental.  There are four pillars with turning mid-drifts, each with four different collored designs, the walls are filled with paintings of the Old Ones worshiping their queen, and a glass rectangular box standing upright in the middle of the room.  As Kain touches it, the glass glows with light-colored mists, and the Great Mother Hati appears within the glass as an iridescent figure.  She wears different shades of violet silks, many gold bracelets around the wrists and neck, and her hair is bound upright to hold a light crown.  Her skin is a gravestone grey, there are bright violet tattoos across her face, and large raven’s wings upon her back.

Hati: “Who awakes me?”

Kain: “It was I, Kain.”

Hati: “I…sense my kinds touch upon you.  Are you one of the human eternals blessed by the Pillars of Nosgoth?”

Kain: “That I am, though the Pillars are no more.  Who might you be?”

Hati: “As was prophesized, the Pillars have fallen, and the Deceiver has been released.”

Kain: “The Deceiver, if you mean the false Elder God, has chosen a body and now threatens the survival of Nosgoth.  I ask again, who are you?”

Hati: “You could not have guessed by my coffin, but I am the Great Mother Hati, queen of the Old Ones, and the last in the line of an ancient royal family.  This is my self-made prison for my soul.  I ordered its creation so that I could stay and see the defeat of the Deceiver.  I had no idea how long it would take.”

Kain: “Fear not, for I have sworn to destroy and rid it of my empire.”

Hati: “Oh, I can see your soul much clearer now.  Yes, you have it within you to destroy it, but you’ll need more powers to be successful.”

Kain: “I am powerful already.”

Hati: “Would you deny yourself more then?  I offer you a sample of my powers from when I was alive, but you must swear upon the holy blood in your veins that you will not stop opposing the Deceiver until either you or it is destroyed.  Swear this oath to your once beautiful Queen.”

Kain: “I serve no Queen, but I’ll honor you as my ancestor.  I swear it upon my blood, either the false Elder God or I shall die.”

Hati: “Very good.  But before you release me, please answer me one question.  Does a single member of the Old Ones still live?”

Kain: “The last to live was Janos Auldron, and he met his fate in the same prison as the Hylden.”

Hati: “We are truly no more.  Irony is such an insult to the dead, and poor Janos met his end in at the hands of our most hated and defeated enemies.”

Kain: “Now that I’ve answered your question, answer me one of mine.  Why does the vampire spirit of Vorador visit this place?  Is he dead?”

Hati: “Vorador?  Yes, I have met him.  No, he isn’t dead, though he wishes for it.”

The room creaks and moans.  An outside shot shows that the stalactite/temple is going to fall.

Hati: “Hurry!  There are four shields keeping my soul in this tomb.  Align the symbosl to the shield, and it will weaken them enough to be broken.”

Each pillar will have four symbols upon it, each with its own color.  The Player must turn these pillars so that all the pillars show the same color with the color of Hati’s outside shield.  Once this is done, Kain can attack it and break one at a time.  ‘Attack #3’ is the best for breaking them.  However, turning the pillars simply by attacks will be too slow, but ‘Mind Blast’ can turn them with a single blast.  After all the shields are destroyed, Hati’s spirit glows brightly, holding out an open hand for Kain to touch.  When he does, his body is covered with electricity, bolts flying out of him and burning the walls.  HE then shifts to the Spectral Plane and views the Great Mother Hati’s spiriting lighting up the cavern.  It is truly a remarkable sight.

Kain: (Thinking) “All of my experiences in the Spectral Realm ahd been gloomy revelations of mortality, but this spectacle was somehow uplifting.  I assume I could have consumed her as I had many others before, but something kept me from it.  Perhaps it was my respect for the race responsible for my dark gift.  It might have been my desire to see Hati’s ending.  I always believed my final death would be a glorious, bloody ending handed over by a worthy foe.  In a way, the false Elder God could be suc a foe.  I envisioned myself experiencing what Hati was before me, and it was pleasing.”

Hati disappears, then Dumuzi’s face reappears.

Kain: “This is your gift?  To tempt me with a quiet death?”

Dumuzi: (Chuckles) “No, merely to show you that oblivion is not your enemy.  You were born with a talent to defy death, a talent you share with the Elder God, though he is much more practiced at it.  If you defy death forever, then you’ll never know the bliss of release.”

Kain: “Is this how you prepare your soldiers for war?  Only a fool strives for death.”

Dumuzi: “Only a fool lives forever.”

Kain: (Thinking) “Before Raziel’s sacrifice, Dumuzi’s words would have been wasted.  Now my pride had been cracked since the day my Right Hand threw himself upon my sword.  I allowed myself to see that winged statue’s wisdom.  I might have to die to destroy the false Elder God.”

Dumuzi: “The Great Mother Hati’s gift has enabled you to harness the element of lightning, striking out at all your enemies at once.  Go now to the Silenced Cathedral and discover what web the Zephonhim Cornel Yofiel has caught herself within.”

Dumuzi’disappears, leaving Kain all alone in the cavern.
