"We must prevent it. We should do what we can do about it. You said you have the key to change destiny, Kain...", - said Janos to me. He looked like a terrified child. I could understand him. He remembered that apocalyptic war against the hylden.
"It is not that simple. We must arrange that two versions of the Soul Reaver blade will meet in the same time and location. This creates a paradox of all the existence", - I explained him, - "I must meet myself in earlier version. And changing the history may become even worse".
"What can possibly be worse than this?!", - Janos shouted.
"To change the history, I need to know where and when is that moment, that I can find the earlier version of the reaver blade", - I said, - "And right now I have no information about any future events. I do not know where even to start".
"Then perhaps we need somebody who would provide us with the information we need. Someone who can see the future, and will be ready to help us...", - Janos started, looking at me with a smile, as if he had an idea.
"Hm?...", - I wondered who could help us. I did not want to go back in time to see Moebius again.
"Do you not remember a woman about whom Vorador told you? The Seer. He saved her life during our war against the Hylden, and then she owed Vorador a favor. So she helped you to destroy the device that held me. I remember my imprisonment inside the machine as if it was a few days ago, thanks to the two thousands years of lethargy. So she is older than me, and than everybody of our race that I knew. I doubt that she lives now, as Vorador told me that Lord hylden had killed her after you talked to her", - Janos said.
"Yes, I remember her. We must go to her to the time when she still lived, and when I can be sure that I know her location. Luckily my memory does not fail me, so I know the timeline we need", - I said and pointed on the Sarathan Stronghold.
I directed the exact time period we needed, and we both moved through the portal of the Chronoplast, just a few hours before my younger self met the seer before she was found by the Sarathan Lord... I turned into cloud of bats, and Janos just flew. We reached Meridian, and quetly invaded the city. Of course we had to kill a few guards. The city was guarded very well, and raising alarm would ruin everything. I sensed the smell of war, of death, of decay and industry... once again. The dark streets of Meridian, where the sun could not get, because the streets were too narrow, and though were always covered with shadows. It was the twilight time, and I knew I had to hurry to the Seer. Her house was outside the city. Me and Janos had to sneak into a cart of bags of wheat, and dug ourselves into them. The trader left the city to his farm, or village, or domain... I did not know. I just knew we were on our way. As we reached the house, me and Janos jumped out. The farmer did not hear anything.
We reached the Seer's house. We did not even manage to knock on the door - she opened it for us.
"Come in, Kain, Janos. I must say I expected you to come earlier. You are not punctual. And all that after you altered history so much, Kain", - she said. The Seer was amazing. She looked both like Hylden and Ancient Vampire. I wondered what was she? How old is she? How powerful? What does she know about the prophecy? And did she knew about the paradoxes? And about Raziel and his Free Will?.
"I will answer your questions Kain", - she said, - "But first I want to introduce myself. I am not a vampire, and not a hylden. And not even a hybrid of those. No. I am much older than both races, Kain. I know the past, and the future. I know everybody's about destiny, just like Moebius did. Knowledge is power Kain, and I can share with you. But you must promise me that you will do whatever I ask you to do, because I know every event and its consiquenses... Do not bother answer me Kain, you are agree. I know it", - she said.
"Well, if I do not have to explain why am I here, Seer, than you can tell me... everything. Everything you know... about me, about the future, the fate, the Free Will. And also, just as a bonus question: who are you?", - I was really excited.
"I am the firstborn. The first female. I am the mother of both Hylden and Vampires. I live for many thousands of years. The first living being in Nosgoth, along with my partner. He was the first male. We were created by the world itself... some kind of power. The God, as you all prefer to call it. The real God, not the false one, that you saw, Kain. We lived, we evolved, we got knowledge, we made kids. We had three children. They all looked different. The first of them was a blue child with feathers. We called him Vampire. The second one had big green eyes and pale white skin. We called him Hylden. The third one was born as a fake. He was sick and the weakest of our children. We called him human. These were the fathers of the three races you know. Later we genetically created their female counterparts...", - she was telling the story, until Kain interrupted her.
"Enough of that mythology lessons", - I said - "Get to the point, woman!".
"After all you have passed, after so many years, you are still such arrogant and unpatient. Listen to the end Kain. The information I tell might be useful to you", - Seer said, - "The three races lived in peace for thousands of years. Me and my "husband", could see the future and the past. We could see only one stream, just as Moebius did. We knew that everything was depended on destiny.
One day my husband died. He knew it would happen, and he could not and did not want to do anything to prevent it. It was his destiny. And his destiny was also to reborn after death. Being more concret - I ressurected him. After his ressurection, he genetically changed a little bit. Soon, he died again. The fate was not merciful for him. But even though - I was destined to revive him again. And it was then... everything started...", - The Seer stopped.
"What started? Can you tell me about the destiny of Nosgoth, the prophecy, the part of Free Will, and where or when should I create a paradox to alter history?", - I said. She was annoying. I did not want to hear those history lessons. And we did not have much time.
"Free Will, Kain. Do you know what it means? I cannot see the actions of a being that has a free will, during a time when a paradox occurs. And you know it on the example of Raziel, don't you? You already know how it works, Kain. But have you got any idea why it works like that? What gives the Free Will? I suggest you should listen to me patiently.
When a being was dead and revived two times in the same body, he gets the Free Will. He disattaches from the Fate itself. My husband understood it, when he was experimenting with placing his soul into subjests. Using the time shifting device (that Hyldens already built in that time), he found out that two identical items that held his soul inside, could create a paradox of all the existence of our reality. It happened when the soul of the Free Will being was meeting its former self.
Yes, Kain. Raziel was not the only one with Free Will. There were many of them along the history of Nosgoth. Raziel was killed and reborn two times. And as a Guardian of Balanse, you could see in your vision how Raziel would gain the Free Will. And it does not matter, what items you use to create a paradox. Any item can be suitable for creating paradox. It just has to hold the Free Will entity inside it. Raziel was inside the reaver blade. That is why you need the reaver to create paradoxes", - she stopped. I was really confused. The new information was hard to be taken. I needed a few minutes just to interpret her words.
"And what had happened to your husband?", - I asked.
"He had different motives than I did. He found out that a creature with Free Will did not need any food or other flesh needs. He could devour souls. He could shift between the Material, Spectral and Demonic Realm. He gazed out acros the plains of posibility, and realized that he had become like God. When he was not devouring souls for a long time, he felt hunger. And with each soul devoured, that devouring entity gains its knowledge that the soul gained while it was in a living body. The the soul immediately returned to the wheel, to reborn, instead of waiting its turn. The soul reborn inside a new body, loosing its memories and starting a new life. This is the world you know Kain, but it was not created like that. Each living creature was keeping his memories after death, and after the reincarnation, he remembered everything of his previous life. It is amazing, isn't it, Kain?", - she asked.
"I don't know... tell me more", - I said.
"With the knowledge of our ancestors, we could not to repeat their mistakes over and over again in our following reincarnations. After a few generations, we could end the hatred, the wars and live a life of harmony and peace. But my husband settled down in the underworld, in the Spectral Realm, under water, and devoured souls. He created minions to do the hard work for him - the Sluaghs. With centuries, periods, aeons passed, he began to grow up in size and powers. He became invisible to those who did not have Free Will. He could use telepathy all around the world. He evolved into something big and ugly...
There were more beings that were resurrected three times, and gained Free Will. They could oppose my husband, but he decieved them, and they have become his special agents. They could also shift between the three realms and devour souls, just like Raziel. And they evolved too. They were all loyal to my husband, to their God. he ordered them to live in the Demonic Realm, and called them each time he encountered a serious opponent (with Free Will of course), that does not submit his rule. These were the Demons, the original inhabiters of the Demonic Realm. As Raziel and these Demons, my husband was a Soul Reaver", - The Seer finished.
"And your husband... is the Elder God!", - I finaly understood it. How clear it could be. I could benefit something from this history lesson. Knowledge is power, as I always said.
"Chess and mate, Kain. He actually took control of the Wheel of Fate. He used his Free Will to feed himself. The more he got, the more he wanted... I knew what the future would be. To warn the future generations, I wrote a prophecy, according to what I saw. I saw three different options, three directions... two sides of a coin, and the third side - its edge. And I saw Raziel, the one whos choise would decide the fate of Nosgoth.
Raziel could choose three ways. One was to kill you and get devoured by the reaver, thus letting Hylden enter and conquer Nosgoth. Two, was to spare you, thus be saved from the reaver by you, and then refuse to sacrifice, leaving the world in your hands Kain, until it eventually dies. And three, was to spare you, be saved from the reaver, and then give his life to purify you, Kain, giving Nosgoth a hope. And he chose the third option. Now the Elder God still has the Free Will, but he doesn't have the opportunities to create paradoxes. And this is his weakness. And also, you have the weapon that can harm him", - she said, and I understood it, at last.
"And what about the next chapter of the prophecy?", - I asked, - "I read its last line. It says that the Hylden will return to Nosgoth. How can I prevent it?".
"The Elder God wants them to return. That is why he wants you dead, Kain. New Guardians have been chosen in your timeline, but they still don't have enough power to Guard the Pillars. When you die, Hyldens can get through", - said The Seer.
"Do you mean that his destiny is to die and the Hylden will eventually prevail?", - asked Janos.
"Not if you both do as I say. First you must do a few things, Kain. Then kill the Elder God. Only then you should bring together two reavers to change history", - said The Seer, - "you weapon is formidable, and can harm the Elder God. But harming him is not enough. He is very powerful and every soul he devours in the Spectral Realm will regenerate him. You must deal him such a great damage that would kill him with one hit".
"How?", - I was interested.
"The Nexus Stone", - she said, - "It was created as a counter weapon for the Soul Reaver, and a deadly artifact against the Ancient Vampires. However, it's main purpose is different. It was created also as a charging battery. If you use it along with the Balanse Reaver, it will charge the blade with ultimate power, enough to kill the Elder God with one hit. But remember, it chrages the reaver only once. You have just one hit! You must deliver a direct blow. After the hit, all of the reaver's element will be gone, and your weapon will turn into a simple Soul Reaver, just the way you found it in Avernus at the first time. And just as the reaver William the Just had. That will end with him. You already know where you can find the Nexus Stone, don't you, Kain?", - she asked.
"Yes, I know", - I said. I remembered as I threw away the Nexus Stone to the portal that the Hylden Lord had opened, to lock it. The gate was destroyed, the portal was sealed, and those of the Hylden which remained in Nosgoth have died. That should have happened just a few days later that moment when I was talking to her. I just had to wait, and then go to the Demonic Realm after my younger former self had killed the Hylden Lord. There the Nexus Stone had to be.
Suddenly we all have heard voices of approaching soldiers outside. When they got closer, we could hear the Sarathan archers and talking to each other, surrounding the house. They were all standing still, guarding their positions, awaiting for their leader.
"Now you must go, Kain and Janos. Your former self, Kain, will arrive in a few minutes. The Sarathan Lord must not see you, otherwise it will lead to a fatal paradox, that none of us knowns its results. He has the reaver right now. Go! Now! Leave!", - as she said that, the front door has opened, and my younger self came in. Me and Janos were already outside, so he did not see us. "Be gone, Dark One. I did not send for you", - she told him...
My younger self and Seer were talking, while the Sarathan Knights were getting closer to the house, improving the blockade. Me and Janos looked at the scene from our hiding place. From the distance we could see a green high figure with green glowing eyes. He was giving orders with his deep terrifying voice. The figure was the Sarathan Lord, or the Hylden Lord. He levels the Soul Reaver at the Seer's house and fires off a blast of energy.
"The world will be made pure by my hands", - he said. He gives a signal and the archers shot a volley of fire arrows that rain down onto the house, setting it alight. "I will give you the peace you seek, Kain. Your death beckons you", - he said.
Me and Janos did not go away. We just could not. If we were leaving our hiding place, some of the archers would have noticed us. We had to wait until the scene was over. When my younger self was teleported away by the Seer, she got out of the house. The Sarathan Lord gave an order to hold their fire, and came towards her.
"Seer? How could you help this parasite. He is a pathetic parody of what has become to their once noble race. I am so much disappointed of you", - he said.
"Do you know who are you talking to, Hash'ag'gik? I know the future. I know your future. You are playing a loosing battle, "Lord" Sarathan", - said The Seer.
"Do not be pathetic, woman. The prophecy you wrote has already been fulfilled. The Hylden Champion defeated the Vampire Champion, and the Hylden Messiah (I mean myself), has conquered Nosgoth", - Lord Hylden said.
"Hylden Champion? Vampire Champion? Ha-ha-ha!", - The Seer laughed, - "You misread the signs the same as Janos Audron did. You did not understand the true purpose of the prophecy".
"What do you mean?", - Lord Sarathan looked terrified.
"You should have listened to me, Hash. I was the author of the prophecy, but you and your council denied it, saying that my prophecies are nothing but a vile lie. Why, do you think, Kain is alive now, when you thought that Raziel killed him four centuries ago? Aren't you disappointed of your prophecies? Is there a crack in your intelligence", - The Seer was telling him, - "You were wrong, just as I said. You see, Hash, knowledge is the power. Not armies, not weapons..."
"Shut up!!! I know what I am doing. And by the way, do not burry me when I am still alive and rule my race. At least I am doing something, and not only for me. And whom are you helping? You told me back then, that you would help our race to return from our banishment. And you have just helped Kain. What side are you at? What are your ambitions, Seer?", - Lord Hylden asked. In the meantime, the burning house was reduced to ashes. The Seer did not even look back.
"You knew I would do that, don't you? Why did not you stop it? What game are you playing?", - he said.
"A game, where I already know the result, while you do not. Go on denying the true prophecies. Did you know that Kain was making time travels, altering the history? Of course not", - The Seer said.
"He what?!", - he looked surprised.
"Your rulership of the Order of Sarathan. A good vessel as Janos Audron for your machine. Your small victory on Kain about two centuries ago... It was all a result of a paradox created by Kain, but in an older age", - The Seer smiled, - "But all of this will end soon. You will face death very soon".
"I do not believe you! And I should not listen to you! Kill her!!!", - he shouted, but as his soldiers moved, The Seer teleported herself, nobody knows where. "Damn!", - Lord Hylden sounded really disappointed and despaired.
He never trusted her words, but he could not ignore them, too. Poor thing. He had no idea how soon he would find his death... from my hand, of my former self. I must admit, he was a good leader, and did a lot of things for his race, for what he believed, upon the things he was counting all along. He united his race in the Demonic Realm after their banishment. He corrupted the Circle of Nine, killing Ariel by Mortanius's hands. He decieved my younger self, encouraging me to kill all of the Circle members. Even though I did not sacrifice myself, thus not allowing their entire race to enter, I still shattered the world allowing him alone to come in. Then, he brought Nosgoth to his knees for two centuries. I felt as if I respected him for what he did. He was indeed, a good opponent. But his end was pretty near, and I knew where I must go, and what I must do. As soon as the Sarathans left, me and Janos got out of our hiding place and moved directly to the docks, to take a ship to the Hylden City - a place that served as some kind headquarters for Lord Hylden and his people.
